Rett Syndrome

  • "Imagine all of the symptoms of autism, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's, epilepsy, and anxiety disorders all in one little girl."
  • Developmental regression
  • Affects all parts of the body
  • Dependant on caretakers
  • Unable to communicate verbally
  • Females can live up to 40 years
  • Men cannot survive in the womb

What Causes Rett?

  • Sex-linked
  • Not inherited
  • Mutation of the MECP2 gene
  • Located on the X chromosome

Diagnosis

  • Blood test
  • Done when symptoms show
  • Not always certain

How Many Have Rett?

  • Less than 1000 are diagnosed per year
  • 1 of every 12,500 females
  • Affects mostly females

Treatment

  • No treatment in specific
  • Medicine for symptoms
  • Physical therapy
  • No cure
