RENAL AGENESIS

BIRTH DEFECT

WHAT IS RENAL AGENESIS ?

  • Renal agenesis is when a baby is missing one or both kidneys at birth.
  • Unilateral renal agenesis describes the absence of one kidney.
  • Bilateral renal agenesis is the condition in which both kidneys are missing.

WHAT CAUSES IT?

  • Both URA and BRA occur when the kidney bud fails to develop at an early stage.
  • This and other kidney defects are associated with gene mutations.
  • The mutations occur naturally.
  • It is not yet clear why this happens.

SYMPTOMS

  • Widely separated eyes with skin folds over the upper eyelids
  • Ears that are set low
  • A nose that is pressed flat and broad
  • Limb defects
  • A receding chin

EFFECTS

  • High blood pressure
  • Blood in urine
  • Swelling in the face, hands, or legs
  • Developmental defects in the inner ear, genital tract, head, and vertebrae
  • Foamy urine

PREVENTION

  • Women can lower the risk of renal agenesis by reducing known environmental factors
  • Prevention is not possible.
  • Use of alcohol and certain drugs that can affect kidney growth.

CURE

  • This condition is not comparable with outside life
  • The condition is typically fatal within the first few days of life.
  • Newborns usually die from underdeveloped lungs shortly after birth.
