RELIGIOUS VIEWS ON DIVORCE AND RE-MARRIAGE

CATHOLIC ATTITUDES

  • Catholic Church disallows divorce and re-marriage
  • Death is the only valid reason
  • It does allow legal separation if they struggle living together
  • A civil divorce is invalid in the eyes of God
  • Ending of marriage is allow under law but not the church

WHY DO THEY THINK THIS?

  • Jesus taught that divorce is wrong
  • Marriage creates a covenant with God, it can't be broken
  • Re-marriage is seen as bigamy or adultery which are both serious sins
  • Catholic Churches do allow annulments

NON-CATHOLIC ATTITUDES

  • Most think divorce is wrong but it is allowed if the marriage has broken down
  • Normally required to talk to a minister if a re-marriage is wanted
  • Asked to show repentance for failure and the re-marriage will be for life

WHY DO THEY THINK THIS?

  • Jesus allowed divorce for adultery
  • In certain situations divorce is considered the lesser of two evils
  • Allowed forgiveness and a new chance if they repent for their sins
  • Better a divorce than live a life of hatred

ISLAM ATTITUDES

  • Some muslims belive that marriage should be for life
  • Divorce should be allowed if marriage doesn't work
  • Divorce is the most hated of lawful things
  • Most marriages are arranged by families
  • Ending the marriage could result in family feuds

WHY?

  • Muslims await judgement day
  • Harming your child during divorce threatens paradise
  • Qur'an teaches that they should try everything to rescue the marriage
  • Divorce must be permitted for Muslims before it can take place
  • "The most detestable of lawful things near Allah is divorce

IS IT OKAY FOR RELIGIOUS PEOPLE TO GET DIVORCED AND REMARRIED?

  • We personally think it is the choice of the person, not the church
  • The majority view sees divorce and re-marriage as a sin
  • Both religions have reasons for and against
  • Depending on the situation, yes it is okay
