JUDAISM

History of Religion

Judaism is the oldest of the world's four biggest monotheistic religions (religions with only one god). It's also the smallest, with about 12 million followers around the world.

  • The Torah was an important document

BASIC RELIGION BELIEFS

  • The Jews believed in one god
  • They believed in Monotheism

RELIGION CUSTOMS/CULTURE

  • The Jews wore Kippahs
  • They wore Tallits
  • They also wore Tefilin

WORSHIP CENTER/SACRED BUILDING

  • The Jews worshiped in Synagogues

SYMBOLS THAT REPRESENT THE RELIGION

  • The Star of David is the symbol for Judaism

LIFE AFTER DEATH

  • The Jews thought that
  • all souls will return to physical bodies in this world.

CHRISTIANITY

HISTORY OF RELIGION

  • Christianity developed out of Judaism in the 1st century C.E.
  • It is founded on the life, teachings, death, and resurrection

IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

  • The Bible is an important document

BASIC BELIEFS

  • Christians believe that there is only one God,
  • whom they call Father as Jesus Christ

WORSHIP CENTER/SACRED BUILDING

  • Christians worship in a church

SYMBOLS THAT REPRESENT THE RELIGION

  • A fish, cross, and a dove represent Christianity

LIFE AFTER DEATH

  • Christians believe there is an afterlife
  • Although the body dies and is buried or cremated
  • they believe that their unique soul lives on and is raised to new life

ISLAM

HISTORY OF RELIGION

  • Islam began in Arabia and was revealed to humanity by the Prophet Muhammad
  • Those who follow Islam are called Muslims

IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

  • There are two main sacred texts in Islam: the Qur'an (or Koran)
  • and the Hadith (or Hadeeth).
  • The Qur'an the sacred text, is believed to be the word of God as to Muhammad.
  • The Hadith is a secondary text that records sayings of Muhammad

BASIC BELIEFS

  • Muslims believe that there is only one God, called Allah.
  • The unity of God is a basic tenet of the Muslim faith

WORSHIP CENTER/SCARED BUILDING

  • Muslims worshiped in a Mosque

SYMBOLS THAT REPRESENT THE RELIGION

  • the crescent moon and star pre-dates Islam by several thousand years
  • This symbol became affiliated with the Muslim world

LIFE AFTER DEATH

  • Muslims believe that the present life is a trial in preparation for the next realm of existence
  • When a Muslim dies, he or she is washed and wrapped
  • in a clean, white cloth (usually by a family member)
  • and buried after a special prayer, preferably the same day.
