POPE ST. JOHN XXIII

  • Angelo Roncalli was born in 1881 to a poor farming family in Italy.
  • He was the thrid of thirteen children.
  • He entered the seminary at 12 and became a priest at 23.
  • In World War I he served as a chaplin in the army medical corps.
  • After the war, he was named an archbishop and served in many countries.

POPE ST. JOHN XXIII

  • His papal accomplishments included...
  • He named 23 new bishops from countries all over the world.
  • He stopped dining alone and joked around quite often.
  • He called Vatican II, which was only the ird in 500 years.
  • He called for change in the church and a new perspective of things.

POPE ST. JOHN XXIII SIGNIFICANCE

  • He changed traditions that allowed the pope to connect with the people.
  • He called Vatican II which changed the church and allowed itself into the 20th century.
  • By appointing 23 new bishops he allowed the catholic faith to become a more world religion.
  • The council that he called became more welcoming to all peoples of differnet cultures.

POPE ST. JOHN XXIII GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

  • Courage: The Holy Spirit gave him the courage to start a council,
  • That was unliked by many and thought unneccicary by others.
  • The Holy Spirit gave him the courage to enact of the council,
  • to change things in the church for the better. The Holy Spirit,
  • Gave him the courage to know what to do even though many thought differently.

POPE ST. JOHN PAUL II

  • He was born Karol Wojtyla of Poland and was the first nonitailian pope since the 16th century.
  • He was born in 1920 and at the age of 9 lost his mother and then at 12 his brother.
  • He was ordained a priest in 1946 and moved up the ranks fast and was a cardinal by 1967.
  • He was an actor and poet in his younger years.
  • He was present at Vatican II and contributed in the changes done by the council.

POPE ST. JOHN PAUL II'S ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • He became the most traveled pope visiting 130 countries.
  • He helped bring down communism by his opposition to it and visiting countries with it.
  • He became the first pope to enter a Muslim mosque and he visited a Jewish synagogue.
  • Under his rule the church published a revised code of Canon Law.
  • He was the first nonitaliann pope in over 400 years and spoke 8 languages.


Pope St. John Paul II Modern Contributions

He made the church a more worldly religion by visiting the most countries ever by a pope. This allowed the church to grow and become more fruitful in worldly customs. He also helped bring an end to communism which was against the modern world. The push for democracy led by the pope was a very modern move by the pope.

Pope St. John Paul II's Gift of the Holy Spirit is right judgement. He shows this gift through the actions the pope made to strengthen his faith as well as the strength of the church's faith by traveling and visiting other religions forming stronger faith bonds with people and God.

POPE FRANCIS

  • He was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936.
  • He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Italian immigrants.
  • When he was a teenager, Jorge had a surgy to remove one of his lungs.
  • He recieved a masters degree in chemistry from the University of Buenos Aires.
  • He was ordained a priest in December of 1969

POPE FRANCIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Pope Francis has made a tranistion into a very simple pope.
  • This includes not living in the papal apartment, have an adverage vehicle,
  • wearing simple garments and not wearing the popes gold jewlery.
  • He has been a very loving and personable pope that has strengthened many faiths
  • He has put down many rumors of the church such as that aitheist are bad people and not to judge homosexuals.

POPE FRANCIS MODERN ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Pope Francis has moved the Church to modern ways such as tweeting very often.
  • This shows the movement towards technology and social media that young people can relate to.
  • He has met with religous and political leaders that the church has normally not talked with
  • This shows a movement towards peace that Pope Francis had been moving towards as well,
  • as a beginning of a open communication with other groups with opposing veiws which is a very modern view.

Pope Francis Gift of the Holy Spirit

Pope Francis shows the gift of understanding because of his acceptance and understanding of so many different political and religious groups. He also embraces those with disease or disabilities. He also talked about he can not judge homosexuals as well as women who have had an apportion.
