REGGAE MUSIC

WHERE DID REGGAE ORIGINATE FROM?

  • Reggae music first came around in the 1960s.
  • It originated from Jamaica.
  • "Strongly influenced" by mento and calypso music.

COMMON ELEMENTS IN REGGAE MUSIC...

  • "Call and response" is always used and so is an accent on beats 2 & 4.
  • It is played in 4/4 rhythm but is slower than ska and rocksteady.
  • The bass in reggae music is thick and heavy and plays a dominant role.
  • drums and bass are important instruments-make up what is called the "riddum"
  • an easily recognised element is the offbeat rhythm played throughout.
