April 11, 1865,President Lincoln said that African Americans, including those who have served in the army or been educated ,deserved the right to vote.
Lincoln was assassinated three days later, so he could not see his plan through.
Vice President Andrew Johnson took over as president.

Reconstruction came to an end when the last of the Union troops left the south in 1877.While the country had come a long way in granting rights to African Americans,there was still much work to do.
