FACTS

  • Amendment freed slaves and gave the men citizenship and the right to vote.
  • Congress passed the reconstruction act of 1867.
  • Three years later, all southern states had been readmitted to the union.

PRESIDENT LINCOLN

  • April 11, 1865,President Lincoln said that African Americans, including those who have served in the army or been educated ,deserved the right to vote.
  • Lincoln was assassinated three days later, so he could not see his plan through.
  • Vice President Andrew Johnson took over as president.
  • Confederate supporter John Wilkes Booth shot President Lincoln on April 14, 1865.

Reconstruction came to an end when the last of the Union troops left the south in 1877.While the country had come a long way in granting rights to African Americans,there was still much work to do.
