RECONSTRUCTION

ETHAN NORLAND

POLICAL CARTOON

  • One way to express your views on a certain topic is using political cartoons.
  • The creator of this cartoon believes that the blacks were intentionally dividing the country.
  • The cartoon shows the "evil" black man literally tearing the countary apart.

A DISCRIPTION OF THE F.M.B. DUTIES

The job of the freedmen's bureau was to help the newly freed slaves. They would settle labor disputes where the freed people were being taken advantage of. The F.M.B. not only fixed railroads but they helped feed freedmen. Despite this they were disbanded due to angry southerners.

FREEDMEN'S BUREAU

In this cartoon the man in the middle is representing the F.M.B. On either side of him there are mobs. The one on the right side shows the freed slaves, the left shows the angry white. The only thing keeping them from killing each other is the freedmen's Bureau.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN DIED TODAY

  • President Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865
  • But died a day later on Apirl 15, 1865
  • He was shot in the back of the head in fords theater by john wilkes booth
  • Wilkes booth and multiple accomplices making attempts on many other
  • Attempts on political leaders in attempt to win the war for the south

The reconstruction can be considered a failure and a success at the same time. Freedmen got rights after the war but no was making sure that they were actually able the use these rights. Blacks didn't get the right to education and in order to vote in the south you needed to pass a reading test that was really hard for blacks but easy for whites. The 14th amendment gave all men equal rights but there segregation was strong as ever because the "separate but equal" laws took affect. The KKK and other racist groups ran free killing and threatening blacks. It's safe to say we wouldn't be where we are without reconstruction but it could have done a whole lot more for African-Americans.
