Plot-
Exposition: In the story Recitatif, there are two eight year old girls, Twyla and Roberta; one white and one black. Their mother’s left them at St. Bonaventure’s orphanage. Through historical references we can pinpoint the setting to be in the 1950’s.
Rising Action: The two girls separate when leaving St. Bonny’s, but their paths meet at the local diner. Twyla worked at the diner and Roberta was a wild Hendrix chaser. It was such an awkward confrontation that the tension and hostility begins.
Climax: Again, the two women meet again in the school parking lot, while Roberta was picketing. Twyla again tries to talk to Roberta, but Roberta and the other people start violently rocking Twyla’s car.
Falling Action: As parent’s, Twyla and Roberta protest at the local school, because they are combining the two races into one school. Another important thing was that Twyla realized she did not bully Maggie, and she was not black.
Conclusion: The two women are now mature, and have their final encounter of the story. They meet at a coffee shop in the 1980’s. Roberta admits to not kicking Maggie, and the storie start about the two of their pasts. They begin to cry over their emotional journey

Stereotyping & Racism

  • Toni Morrison's goal...
  • What does it say about the reader???
Goal- confuse the reader...who is suppose to be who??
Just when you think you have it all figured out...she switches it up.

everyone had defining reasons why they may have thought one way or another but...

Twyla said...

It Does not Matter!!!

  • A person is a person, no matter what color or economic status
Why does the reader feel inclined to figure out which girl is which color... the author is trying to tell you that it doesnt matter. People are people.
