CHARACTERISTICS OF REALISM

  • Almost exact opposite of Romanticism.
  • Focuses on mostly present issues from now instead of the past or fantasy.
  • The characters are important and are usually average people.
  • The writing is usually like a conversation or someone talking.
  • Realism is set up with truth and showed life and people as they were.

FAMOUS AUTHORS

  • Mark Twain- Wrote famous book Tom Sawyer in 1876.
  • Harriet Beecher Stowe- Published Uncle Toms Cabin in 1852.
  • Herman Melville- Author of Piazza Tales, book of short story's in 1856.
  • Louisa May- Author if little woman. The story about growing up 1869.
  • Sojourner Truth- A dedication to Sojorner Truth in 1850.

  • Civil War started April 12 1861and ended April 9th 1865
  • Abraham Lincoln was assassinated April 14 1865 by John Wilkes Booth
  • Industrial Revolution started in 1850 and working conditions were terrible
  • Women's rights movement started in 1848 Gold rush 1849 and Land Rush 1889
  • The Compromise of 1850, Slave states and free states
