RATIONALIZING THE DENOMINATOR

BY: CARMEN

When do you rationalize the denominator?

Rationalizing the denominator happens when you have a radical in the denominator of a fraction.

HOW DO YOU Rationalize IN THE DENOMINATOR?

  • Multiply the radical by the numerator and denominator.
  • Make sure all radicals are simplified.
  • Simplify the fraction if necessary

1. Multiply radical 3 on top and bottom to get 2rad3/3

2. Multiply radical 10 on top and bottom to get 5rad10/10. Simplify to get rad10/2.

5. Multiply by rad7 to get 5rad7/3x7 & get 5rad7/21.

  • 1.) Multiply radical 3 on top and bottom to get 2rad3/3
