• rastafarianism is a religion .
• it is practiced by black jamaicans
• they refer to it as a religious 
• movement
• they believe Haile Selassie is God

• rastafari beliefs devoloped in the slums.
• This was in Kingston Jamaica
• at this time , jamaica was under great colonial rule
• this was during the 1920s -1930s
• They came up with the message of rasta .

Marcus Garvey

• marcus garvey began the teachings of 
• rasta in Jamaica.
• He led a movement called " Back to Africa."
• he inspired Jamaicans to fight for their rights
• the motherland was freedom from oppression

• Babylon refers to a sinful and vile world

• he was called ras tafari makonen
• that means king in amharic.
• Marcus garvey predicted that he would be king

why ?

• He declared that because the  king was black
• He was powerful and  Africa was too

• its used to free the mind and have a closer
• connection with God.
• you can only smoke the herb if you are rasta
