Quote #1
"Gil," he said finally, "when you were about to take the silver, did you think you were . . ." He hesitated, not sure how to put it, then tried another tack. " I mean, did you feel sort of . . ." He was about to say "inadequate" but he couldn't imagine the word applying to Gilan.
(p. 91-92)

Will is questioning his ability to become a full fledged Ranger.

Quote #2
"For five years, he had tried his best for the grizzled, unsmiling Ranger who had become like a father to him. All he ever sought was Halt's approval, no matter what anyone else in the world might think. A nod of appreciation or one of Halt's rare smiles was the greatest accolade he could imagine. Now, at this final hurdle, he felt he had let his mentor down and he didn't know how or why it had happened. He didn't want to die knowing that Halt would be disappointed in him. He could bear the dying, he thought, but not the disappointment."
(p. 191)

Will is lost in the desert, without water, or his horse Tug, and is dying. He is regretful that he didn't hold up to Halt's expectations.

Quote #3
"The second arrow was already on its way before the first struck Mussaun down. The moment he released the first shot, Will knew, with the instincts of a master marksman, that it was good. In less time than it takes to say it, he nocked, drew, sighted on the black-robed figure of Yusal and released."

Will shows no hesitation when quick action is needed. This helps to prove he is ready to be a great Ranger.

Theme

The theme of the book is to believe in yourself and you can accomplish anything.

"Halt swung into the saddle and glanced around the faces of his companions. He saw his own doubt and worry reflected there and he realized that for their sake, if nothing else, he must adopt a more positive stance. "I don't like it any more than you do," he told them. "But let's look at the positive side of things. He's well armed. He's well trained. He's got a good horse. He's an excellent navigator and he has his northseeker and Selethen's map. He'll be fine."

"The executioner was almost at full stretch now, measuring his stroke before the sword started down. Will knew this shot had to be right. There would be no time for a second attempt. He shrugged away a moment of confidence-sapping uncertainty. Worry that you might miss a shot and you almost certainly will, Halt had taught him. He heard the long sigh of expectation from the crowd, emptied his mind of doubt and allowed the bow string to slide free of his fingers, almost of its own volition, sending the arrow on its way."

"I was just thinking, I can't wait to see Halt in the bridal dance with Pauline. He's not known for his fancy stepping. He should be quite a sight to behold. A total fumble foot!" "Is that right?" she said dryly. "And how do you think you'll manage it?" "Me?" he said in some surprise. "I won't be dancing! It's the bridal dance. The bride and groom dance along!" "For one circuit of the room," she told him. "After which they are joined by the best man and first bridesmaid, then by the groomsman and second bridesmaid." Will reacted as if he had been stung.
(p. 38-39)

"There, all done! Congratulations, Will, you're a Ranger now. Well done! Is there anything to drink?" He addressed the last part to Halt. Will sat stunned. That was it? He'd expected . . . he didn't know what he'd expected but hadn't expected this breezy, off-the-cuff "Sign here and you're a Ranger" approach. "Is that all?" he blurted out. "Of course! You have to have your Silver . . . whatsis, don't you?" He took hold of the chain that held his own Silver Oakleaf around his throat and shook it lightly. It was the badge of a Graduate Ranger. Then he began to search through his pockets frowning. "Had it here! Had it here! Where the devil is it . . . wait. I heard something fall on the boards as I came in! Must have dropped it. Just check outside the front door, will you, Will?" Too stunned to talk, Will rose and went to the door. As he set his hand on the latch, He looked back at the two Rangers, still seated at the table. Crowley made a small shooing motion with the back of his hand, urging him to go outside. Will was still looking back at them when he opened the door and stepped through onto the verandah. "Congratulations!"

"He did well," Gilan said, and Halt turned to him, a rare smile touching the bearded face. "He did," he agreed. "Told you he would," Gilan said, grinning. Halt nodded acknowledgment. "You did. You were right." Gilan shifted to face Halt more directly, remembering something Halt had said some days previously. "But you knew, didn't you? You said to us when we were in Maashava that Yusal had forgotten that Will was out there. So you knew he'd survived. How was that?" Halt's face grew serious as he considered the question. "I think 'knew' is too definite a term. I sensed it. I've always had a sense about Will. There's a feeling of destiny to that boy. I've felt it since the first day he joined me." "And now it's nearly time to turn him loose," Gilan said gently. He saw a mixture of sadness and pride competing in Halt's eyes. Then the grizzled Ranger sighed. "Yes, it is," he said.
