RABIES (COMMON NAME)

  • Scientifically called the Rabies Virus
  • It is a virus

HISTORY

  • Found in 2300 B.C.
  • First found in Egypt
  • The scientist Girolamo Fracastoro discovered the pathogen that caused Rabies

THE VIRUS ITSELF

  • Spread through the saliva of infected animals
  • Symptoms: mild fever, gastrointestinal upset, foaming at the mouth, irregular breathing, 5-7 day coma, death
  • The treatment most widely used is HDCV, a vaccine
  • Incubation period is 30-90 days on average

STATISTICS

  • Estimated 59,000 people die each year
  • 100% mortality rate when left untreated
  • A vaccine, when given with no delay, is 100% effective
