RABIES (COMMON NAME)
- Scientifically called the Rabies Virus
- It is a virus
HISTORY
- Found in 2300 B.C.
- First found in Egypt
- The scientist Girolamo Fracastoro discovered the pathogen that caused Rabies
THE VIRUS ITSELF
- Spread through the saliva of infected animals
- Symptoms: mild fever, gastrointestinal upset, foaming at the mouth, irregular breathing, 5-7 day coma, death
- The treatment most widely used is HDCV, a vaccine
- Incubation period is 30-90 days on average

STATISTICS
- Estimated 59,000 people die each year
- 100% mortality rate when left untreated
- A vaccine, when given with no delay, is 100% effective
