This is Queen Liliuokalani

She was the Queen of Hawaii from 1891 to 1894

But she wasn't always Royal

She was born September 2 1838, by the name of Lydia, to a high ranking family in Hawaii

Her mother was an advisor of the king, which put her in high ranking, and got her a modern education

Since she was of high status, she was a member of the Kings court.

She was married to the Son of a boston sea captain, who was a member of the Hawaiian government

In 1874, her brother was chosen as King

In 1877, her second brother died, making her the heir to the throne

As the Kings regent, she organized schools for young Hawaiians

This meant she inherited the throne, being the first ever women to occupy the Hawaiian throne

While in power, Liliuokalani tried to implement a new constitution that would restore the power to the Monarchy that it lost during her brothers reign

In 1893 a group of Americans tried to overthrow her

She had to surrender

She tried to appeal to President Grover Cleveland to reinstate her as Queen

President Cleveland offered to reinstate her if she pardoned the crimes of the Americans who tried to overthrow her

She denied the offer, but then accepted it

But then Sanford Dole and his posse denied her of the reinstatement

This is Sanford Dole

(Yes he does look like the Lorax)

The government became a Republic, with Sanford Dole as its president

A loyalist tried to restore her to the throne which failed and got her (Liliuokalani) charged with Treason, and punished to house arrest

She then agreed to officially give up the Monarchy, which also meant pardoning the revolters (After this she claimed the abdication was not official)

She had no children so she appointed her Niece as Heir

In 1896 her and her niece tried to convince the president to restore the monarchy

They had no success

She fought the annexation of Hawaii

1898 the USA government annexed Hawaii

FUN FACT:
Liliuokalani was a musician and she wrote 160+ songs and chants in her lifetime, one of which became the Hawaiian National Anthem

This is a song that Queen Liliuokalani wrote

My Reaction:
I was very surprised about a lot of things, like about how easy it was for her to become queen, but how hard things were for her once she became queen. I was also interested that she fought so hard to come back to power.
