Greek Mathematician and Philosopher

PYTHAGORAS'S LIFESPAN

  • Pythagoras lived from about 570 to 495 BC
  • He lived for around 75 years.

PYTHAGORAS BIRTH

  • Pythagoras was born in Samos, Ionia (St. Andrews)
  • Believed to be born to Mnesarchus and Pythais, with about three brothers (Open math Reference)

FAMILY

  • He is believed to have married a woman named Theano, having two children. ( Open Math Reference )

EDUCATION

  • It's said that he was influenced by Thales, a Greek mathematician
  • It's also believed that he was influenced by Anaximander, a Greek philosopher.

  • Pythagoras was believed to not have any occupation, other than spreading his teachings.

CONTRIBUTIONS TO MATH

  • Developed the Pythagorean Theorem, where the hypotenuse squared is equal to the
  • squares of the lengths of sides on a right angle, in right triangles only. (A2+B2=C2) (Pythagorean Theorem)
  • Constructed basics of Geometrical Algebra. (St. Andrews)
  • Discovered three of five basic geometric figures, knowing how to construct them. (St. Andrews)

INTERESTING EVENTS WITHIN HIS LIFESPAN

  • Pythagoras once went to Egypt, and spent a few good years there until the Persian army invaded Egypt
  • where he was taken prisoner. (St. Andrews).
  • Pythagoras is credited with building two schools, one in Samos, Greece, and one in Croatia, Italy. (Open Math Reference)
