PUTTING ON AN ELIZABTHIAN OUTFIT (in order)

  • 1. Smock: first thing a women put on, protected clothing from sweat an boy oils (LEED)
  • 2. Stockings: put on after smock, went up to just above their knees (LEED)
  • 3. Corset: not always worn, close-fitting bodices stiffened with whalebone & made women appear thinner(LEED)
  • 4. Spanish Farthingdale: cone shaped hood skirts that created an A-line shape. (LEED)
  • 5. Bumroll: placed right above hips to help spring out skirts. Not always worn. (LEED)

  • 6. Petticoat: placed under Spanish Farthingdale (LEED)
  • 7. Kirtle and Forepart: seperate skirts worn under Spanish Farthingdale.(LEED)
  • 8. Partlet: Special shirt worn under gown, usually has ruffled collar and puffy sleeves. (LEED)
  • 9. Gown and Sleeves: While putting this on, women had to make sure the Parlet was
  • evenly tucked around the collar of the gown (LEED)

Facts on Elizabethian Outifts

  • Not all Women wore the same thing, what they wore depended on their age.
  • Putting on an upperclass gown was a very complicated process.
  • dresses were put on in an order.
