Tips for Parents to Encourage Independent Reading

One of the most important things parents can do is to help their children develop reading skills. How well children learn to read directly affects not only how well they perform in school but also how successful they are throughout their lives. When children learns to read, they have the key that opens doors.

As parents, it is not always easy to motivate your children to love reading. Many children cringe at the thought of reading. In addition, it is hard to find time for reading with your busy schedules. Here are some easy tips on how you can help your child become a better reader.

1.Let your children see you reading. If you are going to encourage your children to read, the best way is to learn is by example. Talk about what you are reading with them.

2. Let your child choose what they read.
Reading for pleasure is one of the best ways to improve performance at school, but teaching a child to love reading involves a lot more than simply handing them a book. Letting children have choices in their reading material goes a long way in raising life-long readers.

3. Help your child choose age-appropriate books on topics that interest them to spark a passion for reading. Take them to the library where you can find tons of books free.

4. Show interest in your child’s reading
Your response or feedback has a strong effect on how hard they will try to become good readers.

5. Encourage a wide variety of reading activities
Make reading an essential part of your children’s lives. Let them read menus, movie name, roadside signs, game guides, weather reports, and other practical everyday information.

Lastly, make use of smartphones or tablets that can be used to install useful reading apps. You might want to consider a smartphone or e-book as a birthday present. Or, you may visit the local library where you can rent an e-book weekly.
