Church Discipline

In church, a man would go up and down the rows with a long stick with a knob on one end and feathers on another. The knob was for prodding children awake should they fall asleep (because that was considered disrespectful and children are resilient) while the feathers were for waking up the elderly with a soft tickle under the chin.
