  • When? No one knows when puppetry began (maybe 19th century?)!
  • Where? No one knows where puppetry began (maybe India & China?)!
  • WHO? Some early examples of puppeteers are:
  •       -Japanese, Africans, Vietnamese, South Africans, Europeans

HOW to use puppetry?

  • Model the use of puppets during group time
  • Create the puppets with the children with simple materials
  • Let the children interact with the puppets through open-ended activities 
  • Can be used as an attention getter/transition aid & to enrich story time 

WHY USE PUPPETS?

  • Through puppetry, young children... 
  • 1. Experience joy through playing and fantasizing 
  • 2. Develop positive self-images and independence
  • 3. Expand vocabulary, communication  and fine motor skills
  • 4. Improve social skills and learn problem-solving skills

HaND puppets

  • Puppets that are put on the hand
  • Come in many types and varieties 
  • Are easy for young children to make an manipulate

STICK/ ROD puppets

  • Puppets controlled by a single stick
  • Stick ideas: Tongue depressor, straw, paper towel roll, craft stick, etc
  • Puppet ideas:Drawn by hand/stencil, cut from magazine/wrapping paper,etc  

marionettes

Puppets controlled by strings that offer an extra range of body movement

Shadow Puppets

  • Puppets held from rods against a translucent screen lit from behind
  • These puppets offer a visual dimension that other types do not

Puppetry in the classroom

  • "Listening Puppet"
  • Puppets that speak in different languages

  • Take the children to see a live-puppet show
