PUEBLO INDIANS

One of The Oldest Nations in The U.S.

LANGUAGE

  • Ancient Pueblos spoke the Hopi Language
  • Seven of the remaining pueblos speak The Keresan language
  • Others speak the Tanoan language, which is the language of most Kiowa
  • All three of these language groups are traditionally oral languages, meaning they were not written down

CULTURE

  • Pueblo Indians are one of the oldest nations in the U.S.
  • Pueblos live in natives of the Southwest desert
  • The Pueblo culture contains: fashion and food
  • Fashion: Pueblo men wore breechcloths and short kilts
  • Women worn knee-length cloth dresses called mantas

CULTURE

  • Food: Pueblos were expert farmers
  • They grew corn, squash, beans, and plenty of nuts and fruits
  • They also grow sunflower seeds

ENTERTAINMENT

  • ARTS: ceremonial dances are at the heart of the Pueblo culture
  • Kachinas are male masks worn in dances on feats days
  • Some small pueblo tribes are known for pottery and colored weaving baskets
  • Stone carving were very popular in the ancient pueblo tribes

CITIES & RELIGION

  • Traditional pueblo governmen features leadership from different sources
  • Among some pueblos specific clans some have traditional obligations to become leaders
  • RELIGION: Pueblo Indians both western and eastern practice blends of religious beliefs
  • Some beliefs are similar to the ones of Roman Catholicism
  • Live in what is now the Southwest deserts
