Characteristics - Anxiety

  • State of dread or desire to avoid
  • Response to a vague or imagined danger
  • Trembling, sweating, rapid heart rate, etc.

When is it a disorder?

  • Interferes with effective living
  • Out of proportion with situation

Types of Anxiety Disorders

  • Phobic - fear
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder - prolonged
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Stress Disorders (PTSD)

Explanations

  • Psychological - psycholanalytic, learning, cognitive theories
  • Biological views - heredity
  • Interaction of factors

Characteristics - Dissociative

  • Separation from conscious thoughts
  • Personality components or mental processes
  • NOT just daydreaming or "into" something
  • Done to avoid stressful events or feelings

Characteristics - Somatoform

  • "BODY" (phys. symptoms)
  • Psychological problems
  • Manifestation - phys. symp.
  • NOT faking an illness
  • Most common: paralysis

Types of Somatoform Disorders

  • Conversion disorder
  • Hypochondriasis

Explanations for Somatoform Disorders

  • Psychoanalytic theory blames repression
  • Others blame the stress of the problems
  • Behaviorists say they get reinforced (escape)
