Feedback Techniques

  • Base feedback on criteria for success.
  • Address what was done correctly and elaborate on how to improve.
  • Give immediate feedback.
  • Allow students to revise their thinking or work.

Criteria for Success

Explicit communication of how to meet learning targets.
Students need to see what good work looks like. Share one or two exemplars of the completed task so students can see what is expected.

Also use a criteria list or rubric as a resource for students to make sure they meet the criteria to do the task successfully.

Using this link to see an exemplar of a 5th grade science conclusion with corresponding criteria.

Immediate Feedback

Using Google Drive
Since Google Drive works in the cloud students will get feedback in real time. No more collecting paper, permanently marking and passing back work. Google documents can be shared with the teacher through the cloud.

Watch this video to see more about using the comments feature in Google Documents to give real time feedback.

If you say "great/excellent" follow it up with "because."

Look at this example of giving specific feedback on what criteria was done well for writing a conclusion in science.

Feedback should elaborate on how to improve to meet the criteria.

Allow for revisions

To meet the criteria
When students show their learning in a digital work environment they are more able to make revisions and edits to improve their thinking/understanding.

Use these feedback techniques in Google Drive
Use this student's conclusion about pendulums to practice giving feedback using comments in Google Drive.

Since this document is "view only" you will open the document to "make a copy" under FILE.

Use the copy to practice giving feedback. Remember to refer to the criteria when giving feedback back on what was done well and how to improve on certain criteria. By using Google Drive the feedback is done in real time and is immediate.
