MATTER

• Matter
• Anything that takes up space and has mass.
• All matter is made up of atoms

ATOM

• The smallest unit of a chemical element.

ELEMENT

• Each element is made of only one kind of atom.
• There are about 120 elements
• Examples:
• hydrogen (H2) oxygen (O2) carbon (C) nitrogen (N2) iron (Fe) aluminum (Al) gold (Au) calcium (Ca)
• Each atom consists of a nucleus, which has a positive charge, and a set of electrons that move around the nucleus.

Periodic Table

• of the chemical elements that exist in the universe (that have been discovered by humans so far)
• Categorizes, organizes elements according to the properties of their atoms

MOLECULE

• Formed when 2 or more atoms join together.
• These may be 2 of the same atom or 2 different atoms.

COMPOUND

• Formed when 2 or more DIFFERENT atoms are joined together
• Examples of Compounds: CO2 NaCl H2O2
• Non Examples - Not compounds: O2 H2 Why aren’t these compounds?

NOTES

• Subscripts tell you how many “atoms” of each element for that molecule Example: H2 = 2 atoms hydrogen Examples: H2O = 2 atoms hydrogen, 1 atom oxygen
• Coefficients multiply the number of molecules you are making! 2 H2O = 4 atoms hydrogen, 2 atoms oxygen
