MATTER

Anything that takes up space and has mass

All matter is made up of atoms

ATOM

The smallest unit of a chemical element

ELEMENT

Each element is made of only one kind of atom

There are about 120 elements

PERIODIC TABLE

A list of all of the chemical elements that exist in the universe

Categorizes, organizes elements according to the properties of their atoms

MOLECULE

Formed when 2 or more atoms are joined together

These may be 2 of the same atom or 2 different atoms

COMPOUND

Formed when 2 or more different atoms are joined together

All compounds are also molecules, but not all molecules are compounds

COEFFICIENT

Coefficients multiply the number of molecules you are making

Ex: 2H2O=4 atoms Hydrogen, 2 atoms Oxygen

SUBSCRIPT

Subscripts tell you how many ‘atoms’ of each element for that molecule

Ex: H2=2 atoms Hydrogen

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants make their own food

CELLULAR RESPIRATION

The process by which ALL LIVING THINGS break apart glucose to release energy
