PRESENTATION OUTLINE

PROPERTIES OF MAGMA

  • Lava and magma are both made up of elements and compounds.
  • Water, carbon dioxide, and table salt are all familiar compounds.
  • They can all be used to identify a substance or to predict how it will behave.
  • Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen are examples of elements.

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

  • Physical properties include density, hardness, melting point,
  • boiling point, and whether a substance is magnetic.
  • Waters freezing point is 0c and its boiling point is 100c.
  • Water is liquid between the freezing and boiling point.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

  • A chemical property is any property that produces a change in the composition of matter.
  • It has the ability to burn and its ability to combine,or react, with other substances.
  • The ability to react qith pxygen is a chemical property of silver.
  • You can often tell that one substance has reacted with another if it changes color,
  • Produces has,or forms a new solid substance.

VISCOSITY

  • Visicosity is the resistance of a liquid to flowing.
  • Because liquids visicosity some liquids flow more easily than others.
  • The greater the viscosity of a liquid the slower it flows.
  • The visicosity of magma depends upon its silica content and temperature.
  • The amount of silica in magma helps to determine its visicosity.

TEMPERATURE

  • Visicosity increases as temperature decreases.
  • The temperature of magma and lava can range from about 750c to 1,175c.
  • The hotter the magma is,the lower its visicosity and the more rapidly it flows.
  • Cooler types of magma have high viscosity and flow very slowly.
