DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence is violence and/or psychological abuse of a former or current familial or romantic partner

SIGNS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

  • Physical abuse including hitting, kicking, punching, etc
  • Emotional abuse including taunting, humiliation, guilt, and name calling
  • Control of victim's income or limiting their money
  • Limiting who they may visit and other daily activities

WHO IS MOST AFFECTED?

  • 85% of victims are women
  • Boys who witness domestic abuse are twice as likely to abuse their own partners
  • Roughly 35% of abused women are pregnant during abuse
  • Women living in lower-income areas are more likely to be victims
  • Roughly 75% of people know someone who has been a victim of domestic violence

LONG TERM EFFECTS

  • Loss of job or career
  • Lifetime physical or emotional issues
  • Abandoned by their church
  • Emotional problems for children as well
  • Lack of funds due to divorce, court, and medical treatment

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE A VICTIM

  • Call 911
  • Have an emergency plan for escape
  • If an argument is imminent, move to a location with my doors and few weapons
  • Find someone that you trust to seek help
  • Go to court

HOW YOU CAN HELP

  • Know the signs
  • If you know a victim, ask if you can get help for them
  • If at all possible, provide aid to the victim and their family
  • Inform others about how they can help victims of domestic violence
