Project Management

Concepts and Procedures

Project management concepts and procedures

  • Project Initiation Project Planning Project Execution Project Monitoring & Control Project Closure.

ASYNCHRONOUS VS. SYNCHRONOUS

  • Due to my work schedule, an asynchronous approach was ideal for me. However, when I required assistance, I found that a synchronous approach provided assistance and different perspectives/approaches to tackle an issue.

Dummies Text

  • I found the text to be a guide or reference material.
  • I actually learned by completing assignments -- by "doing" not "reading" the information found within the text.

Individual/Partner Project

  • Though tedious, the project illustrated the 5 basic components of project management.

Case Studies

  • The case studies on the Titanic and the Brooklyn Bridge were awesome examples that show the importance of project management.
  • Finally, I modeled these case study examples and reviewed how project management was implemented in the construction of the Panama Canal.

Tech Tools, Blogs, & Glossary

  • I found these elements to be helpful in the course as they shared technical information, terms, etc. among the classmates.

Your Instructor

  • I found Dr. Amy Ackerman to be extremely knowledgeable about the subject matter.
  • Dr. Ackerman was quick to respond to emails and provided assistance promptly.

Your Instructor (continued)

  • My instructor set high expectations for this course.
  • Upon completion, I realized that I've accomplished more than I expected upon the onset of this course.

Course Structure & Syllabus

  • The syllabus was very detailed and the course structure was intimidating at first.

Grading & Feedback

  • Grading was transparent and the feedback was helpful.

Online Community

  • This consists of a diverse group of people -- veterans, teachers, parents, etc. I wish I was able interact with my classmates more. The few times I received assistance from a classmate, showed that the class is a resource that can work as a collective to provide help to one another.

Difficulty/Workload vs Anticipated

  • This was my 3rd attempt at this course, so I was not surprised by the work.
  • Nonetheless, the workload was substantial, and necessary to understand the subject matter.
  • The work was not difficult, but very detail oriented.

Surprise about how you think you might use our project management principles beyond this course

  • I took this course to familiarize myself with the basic concept of project management, with the hope of obtaining a project management certification. The formal project management process requires attention to detail and an emphasis on organization which can be used in my current position as a human resource consultant.

A surprise observation shared by a classmate when completing this closure assignment

  • Erik Clark stated, "I surprised myself with how diligent I worked on some of these assignments, to produce a sound project to be proud of! I never knew so much thought and energy could be put into just one project. "

Another surprise of your own, not mentioned in the above

  • I was surprised to find that though this course was challenging, I found that it was quite satisfying. I was also surprised to find that there isn't a "part 2" to this course. Though the essentials were covered, a lot of material remains.
