CHICKEN POX

  • The name of the virus is chicken pox
  • The illness was first discovered by Persian scientist Muhhamad Z
  • Vaccine created by Michiaki Takahashi in 1974
  • The name of disease is Varicella-Zoster virus
  • It wasnt too severe at first until it started spreading

SYMPTOMS

  • Itchy rash, red spots and blisters all over body
  • First symptom seen 14-16 days after contact with person infected
  • Feel sick, fever, headache and cough with sore throat
  • 1 or 2 days after symptoms the rash appears
  • 10 days after first symtpoms blisters have crusted over

TYPE OF VIRUS

  • The type of virus is VZV
  • Its often a mild illness with itchy rash on face for five days or more
  • Its a type of herpes virus

TREATMENT AND PREVENT

  • Yes it is preventable you can take a vaccine
  • If child is not immune you take a vaccine
  • AVoid close contact with people infected with virus
  • Keep healthy

VACCINE

  • Varicella vaccine for kids 12-15 months old
  • They recieve booster shot for protection 4-6 years old.
  • Prevents severe illness in almost all kids immunized
  • Tenderness, and redness where shot given

WHERE IN WORLD AFFECTED

  • United states, australia, canada, costa rica, germany
  • Greece, korea, arabia, spain, Uruguay, and switzerland
  • Pregnant woman without evidence of immunity highest risk of severe varicella

EPIDEMIC

  • Varicella occurs worldwide
  • In temperature climates, varicella tends to be a childhood disease
  • In tropical climates, infections tend to occur later during childhood

WHO GETS VIRUS?

  • Anyone can get the chicken pox
  • People with compromised immune systems have greater risk of complications
  • May not be able to get rid of chicken pox
  • Protect yourself by staying up to date on vaccines
  • Mostly common in children

TRANSMITTED

  • Varicella zoster virus is transmitted from person to person
  • It enters the host through upper respiratory tract
  • People should be isolated for as long as lesions persist

AFFECTED AND DEATH

  • Deaths from chicken pox have dropped 97% in children since vaccine
  • About 105 people die from chicken pox every year
  • About half are children and 11,000 were hospitalized with severe complications
  • Adults get more serious chicken pox than children and need 2 doses of vaccine

The well known actor barbera Walters kissed frank cansella at a New Years party in March, 2013. He was infected with shingles and gave her the chicken pox. But he's now shingle free as of today.

Recently, a 4 year old girl with leukemia died from chicken pox. She couldn't get rid of the vaccine. A doctor developed chicken pox vaccine in mid 1970's at Osaka university, died in 2013 at age 25.
