Five Year Goal Statement

In five years I envision myself working
in an elementary school environment where I have strived to develop:
- a rich collection of literature and resources that is reflective of its population of users,
- strong collaborative relationships within the professional community,
- a class that engages the students with varied technological opportunities and
- a dynamic atmosphere considered to be a welcoming community space.

Road Map towards Professional Goals

The focus for this year involves the completion of my practicum and capstone project and subsequent graduation from UNCG in May with the attainment of a library position in a local elementary school. I will start actively applying to teaching positions starting at the beginning of this calendar year. This year will then also focus on the evaluation of my teaching environment with careful consideration given to developing a growth plan aligning the vision of the school library with the mission and vision of its parent institution.

• Successful completion of my practicum semester and capstone project
• Graduation in May 2015 from UNCG with a GPA of 3.8 or higher
• Continued work as part time substitute in the Buncombe County Library system until I accept a full time position at a school.
• Submission of select essay (possibly a re-worked school assignment) for publication in a professional journal
• Presentation at a professional conference

Once school library media position is attained:
• Establish needs assessment and collection analysis for my library with which to base a three-year goal plan
• Attend PLC’s on regular basis for all grades to establish professional links, gain awareness of curricular goals and establish myself as a valuable member of the learning community.

This year will be my first full year as a school library media coordinator and I will dedicate myself towards meeting the goals on my library improvement plan as I take steps towards establishing the library as an open and welcoming community space. Critical thought will be given to aligning media center improvements to curricular needs.

• Attend PLC’s as regularly as possible for all grade levels to establish firm collaborations with classroom teachers.
• Continue to critically evaluate, select and master previously unfamiliar Web technologies, with a goal of mastering at least four of these within the year.
• Begin establishing relationships and developing library programs by utilizing a host of diverse community collaborators: storytellers, authors, other specialists.
• Establish at least one school-wide annual library initiative this year with the goals of encouraging reading, creating community at the library as well as building the media center presence in the greater school community
• Continued self-directed professional development such as regular participation in online conferences offered through Booklist online and YALSA.
• Periodic newsletter to school community welcoming parents and encouraging visits.
• Continued attention to library improvement steps in accordance with the three year plan I had established for the library.

As this will be my second full year as a school library media coordinator I will be more established in my role and all the tasks this implies: leader, information specialist, instructional partner, program administrator and teacher. I will continue to strengthen my collection intentionally and will take steps towards establishing myself as an integral member of the learning community and a leader fostering community engagement.

• Reach out to colleagues to propose collaborative teamwork focusing on essential standards.
• Diversify my programming in alignment with curricular foci, such as the possible integration of poetry and story-telling slams, annual school-wide book club, technological exploration and makerspaces.
• Continued regular newsletter to school community encouraging visits by parents and students after school hours to check out books and read together.
• Lead two professional development sessions during the year to teachers introducing them to technological applications that can be used in the classroom.
• Continue to critically evaluate, select and master previously unfamiliar Web technologies, with a goal of mastering at least four of these within the year.
• Continued self-directed professional development such as regular participation in online conferences offered through Booklist online and YALSA.
• Continued attention to three year plan established for library improvement.

This year will see the completion of my initial three year improvement plan for my school library, though I will continuously be re-evaluating needs and acting accordingly. I will continue collaborations with teachers and vital community members to create authentic learning experiences. Library programming will be established with multiple events throughout the year making the library the very heart of the school. Programming will be rich in storytelling, creativity and research and information skills. The library will be a place where parents and children can be found after school hours, browsing shelves and settling down to read together as well as a place of dynamic discovery by students.

• Assess completion of three year plan and construct new library plan in accordance with determined needs.
• Continued regular newsletter, incorporating student contributors.
• Continue to critically evaluate, select and master previously unfamiliar Web technologies, with a goal of mastering at least four of these within the year.
• Continued self-directed professional development as well as leadership initiatives taken on school-wide and district level.

This year will focus on growing as a professional beyond the walls of my school library classroom and beyond the walls of the school itself. As I grow professionally, I will begin to reach out to develop partnerships with other entities that hold similar educational goals. Professional service will become balanced with school librarianship. As an SLMC, my focus will be on honing professional collaborations with which to create authentic learning experiences for students.

• Participate as an active member of NCSLMA whether volunteering at events or presenting at conferences.
• Take on leadership role in district and regional community of SLMCs, taking on responsibilities of heading up events and initiatives.
• Strive to build authentic learning experiences for students tied to classroom objectives and the overall school mission.
• Build on the past years of professional experience to create a vision for my continued development as a school library media coordinator in the coming years.

How will I know I've arrived?

To successfully adhere to my five year plan I must rely on my strengths: strong ethical sense, commitment to my vocation, dedication to grow and natural gravitation towards networking and leadership. I also must recognize my needs: limited experience with certain technologies, limited experience working with school budgets and possessing of an as-yet small professional network.

I will know I’ve achieved the goals I’ve set for myself when:
- my students demonstrate genuine enthusiasm and self-determination in their media center learning experiences and when I see the application of their skills beyond the walls of the library classroom,
- I begin to take on leadership responsibilities outside of my daily tasks and
- I begin to see the established vision of my school library realized.
