PRESENTATION OUTLINE
THE PROCESS OF MUMMIFICATION
What They Did in the Early Days
In early ancient Egypt, Egyptians placed their dead in small pits in the desert. From the heat, the body dehydrated fast. Later on Egyptians started to bury their dead in a sarcophagus to protect them.
The Egyptians realized that when they buried the bodies in a sarcophagus, they would decay and they would not look life like.
Discovering Mummification
The Egyptians developed a method of preserving the bodies so they would remain life like.
Where Mummification Took Place
To mummify the body they took it to a tent called the Ibu. The Ibu is where the embalmers started to mummify the dead body.
Starting the Process
The embalmers cleansed the body with palm wine to make it smell good, and then they washed it with water from the Nile River.
First Step
Next, the embalmers cut a slit in the body's left side and removed many of the internal organs because they were the first things to decompose.
Second Step
The liver, lungs, stomach, and intestines were washed and packed in natron to dry them out. The heart was not removed because it was the center of intelligence and feeling and the body would need it in the afterlife.
Fun Fact
If you are wondering about how they got the brain out I'll tell you. They shoved a long hook up the body's nose and smashed the brain with the hook and they pulled it out.
Third Step
Then, the body was covered and stuffed with natron to dry it out. After 40 days, the body was washed again with water from the Nile River. Then, it was covered in oil to help the skin stay elastic like.
THE FOURTH STEP WAS STUFFING THE BODY WITH THESE MATERIALS
The body was now ready to be wrapped!
Fifth Step
First the head and neck were wrapped with strips of linen. Then, the fingers and toes were individually wrapped. Then, the torso.
Sixth Step
Once the mummy was wrapped, the embalmers placed amulets onto the body to protect them through their journey in the afterlife.
Seventh Step
The arms and legs were now tied together. A papyrus scroll with spells from the Book of the Dead was put in between the body's wrapped up hands.
Eighth Step
More linen was wrapped all over the body. On every layer, the embalmers would paint a liquid resin so it glued the bandages in place.
Ninth Step
A cloth was now wrapped around the body and a picture of the god, Osiris, was painted onto it.
Tenth Step
Before the mummy was put into the sarcophagus, a painted wood board was placed on top of the mummy.
Final step
The funeral was finally held for the deceased body. After the funeral, they put the body into a sarcophagus and placed it into a tomb.
