PRISON VIOLENCE

EXTORTION

  • The practice of obtaining something especially money through the force of threats.
  • Victims are inmates who are young, scared, old and confused or mentally or physically weak.
  • For example when extortionist says "Do this or I will hurt you" reply "If you try you wont like what happens ill kick you butt"
  • This verbiage both challenges and insults him. It leaves the door open to both individuals and institutional repercussions.

FOUR TYPES OF CORRECTIONAL VIOLENCE

FEAR

  • Someone is afraid of being hurt or losing something they feel is important.
  • Counter Tactics to fear response, approach in a manner that's not threatening.

FURY

  • Fury type of violence is often accompanied by anger
  • It's someone trying to put the world back together and to regain control
  • Mentally and emotionally lost
  • Counter tactics: He's pushing so you push back

TANTRUM

  • Different from fury,it's looking for an excuse to go off and any excuse, action or reason will do
  • They use violence as a form of self-regulation
  • Creating fear and confusion makes them feel like they have control and power
  • Counter tactics: a victim shouldn't give emotional reactions, that's what they are looking for

RISK FACTORS

  • No consistent safety standards for prisons
  • Overcrowding
  • Insufficient staff training
  • Disrespect between staff and prisoners
  • Excessive solitary confinement
