Primary learners are curious, creative, and diverse! It is important to know and understand that each student thinks, feels, understands, and DOES differently. As teachers, we must encourage different strategies and approaches to learning with our little ones!

Learning Profiles

  • Get to know students by asking them HOW they learn best
  • Student Profiles should contain strengths, needs, and supports/strategies
  • Then, create a classroom profile based on all individual needs and skillsets, very helpful for occasional teachers!
Get to know students best by asking them HOW they learn.

Use this information, combined with observations, to create a student profile. This profile should encompass all information to support each child in their learning.

Once student profiles are complete, use this information to create a Classroom Profile. This is very helpful for occasional teachers coming into the classroom!

Creating a supportive environment:

  • Flexible Seating Options
  • Physically-accessible (for fish AND kangaroos!)
  • Make Technology and other learning tools present
  • Choice and Voice
In addition to providing teaching instruction based on learning profiles, creating a classroom based on children's needs is also important!

1. Flexible Seating Options - Giving students options in how they experience learning is important. Some students may like to work together, others prefer a quiet space where they can concentrate. Providing options will make your room inclusive and a place where students will want to learn.

2. Accessibility - Lastly, providing a space where every student can move freely is extremely important in establishing an inclusive environment.

3. Learning Tools - Some students prefer to work using technology, others may prefer traditional methods. It is important to have all learning tools accessible.

4. Choice and Voice - Encourage inquiry-based learning and let students have a say in where their learning takes them!

Facilitating the classroom:

  • Differentiate based on learning profiles
  • Use multiliteracies in each lesson
  • Collaborate!
  • Encourage Growth Mindset
To properly facilitate a primary classroom, it is important to acknowledge and support the needs based on the learning profile. This will let you know what exact strategies you should be applying in your lesson.

Multiliteracies refer to multiple ways of displaying information. This includes: paper-based activities, technology-based information, and hand-on learning. Essentially, by using many different platforms to show information, we are supporting a multitude of learning styles!

Moreover, collaboration is key to taking a facilitator approach. Allow your primary learners the ability to work together and become their own leaders!

Finally, encouraging a growth mindset is important in helping primary students take risks in their learning. Teaching students that making a mistake is a POSITIVE thing will help encourage more problem solving and positive attitudes.
