He died in September 19,1881,in New Jersey after being shot in July 2 in Washington DC.He was married to Lucretia Rudolph Garfield.He had 5 kids James,Harry,Abram,Mary and Irvin.His nickname was Preacher President Boatman Jim.His father died when he was a toddler.He was the youngest out of 4 kids.James was 40 years old.He was in the Civil War.He taught himself how to write with both hands.
