Task A

How a beauty therapist and a hairdresser should present themselves

Clothing

To create a professional image a hairdresser has to wear an uniform but it's necessarily. If salon does not requires uniform, it may ask for a specific dress code. For example: if you are working in a fashionable salon or you are in Fashion week's hairdressers team you will be asked to wear fashionable clothes and follow fashion.

Whenever, you are asked to wear an uniform or any other clothes, they have to look nice as they have an impact on professional image. Clothes have to be clean, without any stains, not smelly and ironed. They should not expose much body or skin. Shoes has to be flat or with a low heel, and feel comfortable. They can't be open toe because hair pieces can get under skin or nails and cause an infection.

Beauty therapist has to wear an uniform all the time. The uniforms can be different in each salon, by color and or design there is more assortment of beauty therapists' uniforms. It has to be comfortable and loose enough to freely move around the salon. It has to be short sleeved because you will be working with many different products all over your client's body and if yo will be with long sleeved top, it can interrupt work and get dirty fast from the products.

An uniform has to be clean, without stains and smell, ironed and without holes. As for the shoes, they have to be comfortable, flat or with a low heel and go with and image to create a pleasant and relaxing image.

Hair

Hair is very important for a hairdresser. By your hairstyle, a client judges not only about your skills and work but also, about the salon quality. If one hairdresser has a messy hair and looks like she just woke up and came to work without taking some time to do her hair, it will have an impact on salons work and name. Because hairdressers' work and image shows the salon' quality.

Haircut should be correct and neat. Hair well colored, without any dye' stains on the skin. Hair has to be clean, not greasy or frizzy. Well styled. It doesn't matter if it's a pony-tail or any other hairstyle, as longest as it's dressed up well. A hairstyle should show the salon' capability, what it can offer to clients and how skilled the hairdressers are.

Also, when styling your own hair, you should use the products, which salon can offer to the client. When styling clients hair you should tell what effect gives every product you use on their hair, as you have to promote and sell hair styling products as well.

A beauty therapist's hair has to be tied up. It can be a pony-tail or a bun or any other hairstyle as longest as it's up. Because beauty therapists are working over their clients and if hair is not up, it can have a contact with clients body and skin, and irritate it. Also, it would make the client feel uncomfortable and his experience unpleasant.

If yo are waxing, doing nails or any offer job and your hair interrupts your work , it can become a totally mess and you may have to start your work anew or try to correct your mistake. If that situation occurs, you will show a bad image and may loose your client.

Make up

Make-up should go with a hairdresser's hairstyle and fit the salon's image. You have to make sure that it's applied correctly. You have to use a correct foundation shade, which blends in with your skin. "Foundation isn't supposed to give you a bit of tan" says Patel. Also, do not tweeze your eyebrows too much and follow their natural arch. Use an eye-shadow which matches your hair color instead of pencil to colour your eyebrows.

Apply with a thin, stiff and angled brush using tiny strokes. Wear no more than three different shades on your lids at a time. A medium on your lids, a lighter one near your brow bone and a dark one as a liner. This should help you to create correct and nice make up. If you are not wearing make-up, you have to make sure that your complexion looks nice and clean.

Beauty therapist should not wear much make-up and show more natural look. She can advertise trends, like an eyebrows or wear a light make up, if you want to or you are asked to do it. You have to make sure that your skin is nice and smooth.

To get that kind of result, you have to wash your face everyday. Use tonic and face cleaners, like scrubs or foams, and moisturizing cream. If needed, you can use complexion correction creams. This should help you to keep your complexion looking healthy and nice.

Nails & Hand care

Hairdressers can not have long nails and also can't have any nail extensions. Because you can scratch your clients head accidentally. You can wear nail varnish but it has to be not chipped because it doesn't look professional, as your hand are one of the main tools you are using for your work and the pieces of nail varnish can get on your clients hair and scalp and cause an infection.

As for a hand care, you should put moisturizing cream or lotion on your hand at least once a week because from the product you are using on your clients hair can make your hands rough. Also, because you will be washing your clients' hair every day your hands will loose many oil cells and your hand will get dry.

A beauty therapists has to have short nails because if they were long, you can accidentally scratch your clients' body and then the oils and batteries can get into the wound and cause an infection. You can not wear nail varnish as it can get chipped very fast because of all oils and other products usage, and the pieces of nail varnish can get onto clients skin and irritate it.

You also, have to give some time for hand care. You should put on lotion or moisturizing cream on your hands every day to make sure that your hands are soft, as your hands will be touching and massaging clients body and if your hands will be rough, you won't be able to give the best service you can.

Jewellery

As a hair stylist, you should wear as little jewelry as possible. If you are wearing a pair of earrings, you should make sure that they are not too long and they can not get tangled in your clients hair. You can wear short necklaces because they have less possibility to get tangled in clients' hair.

However, if you are wearing quite long necklace, when doing your clients hair, you should hide it under your clothes that it couldn't get into clients' hair or just take it off. No bracelets or rings are allowed, except wedding and engagement rings, because the water underneath them can cause dermatitis. and then you will have to give up your job and cereer.

A beauty therapist can only wear small stud earrings and a wedding ring. Any other jewellery are forbidden because of health and safety reasons, and of a possibility of dermatitis developing and also, because you can scratch your clients body or make any other serious injuries by wearing any other jewellery.

Personal Hygiene

Personal hygiene is important for both hairdressers and beauty therapist. They are both closely working with clients and if they are not taking care of their personal hygiene, they can make feel client uncomfortable and make their experience not very pleasant. You have to make sure to shower or bath every day, use a deodorant to prevent body odour.

Wash your feet regularly and use foot spray if necessarily. Also, brush your teeth twice a day and if needed use a mouthwash. Wash face every morning and use skin cleaning and moisturizing products. Always wash hands after every meal, to get rid of food smell and also after every time using the toilet to not spread germs.

Task B

How appearance, communication and behaviour makes a customer feel

Body language says much about us. Our facial expressions, body posture, gestures, eyes movements, touch and use of space shows how we feel.

In 1967, Albert Mehrabian came up with the "7%-38%-55%" rule determing the communication is made up of 3 points:
1.The actual words you use (7%)
2.The tone of delivery (38%)
3.The body language accompanying your words (55%)
Hence, merely using positive language in conversations only has 7% impact on a customer. To truly connect with your customers you need to also incorporate a positive tone and body langage.

We should control our facial expressions because combinations of our eyes, eyebrows, lips and cheeks movements help to form different moods. We should always smile with bright eyes and do not frown, if we do not like something. We should always keep our face bright, that customer would fell comfortable.

Emotions can also be detected through body postures. We should keep our back straight, not only because it shows our emotions, but also because of our health. If we will stand with slanched back, we can get a hunched back and backache. We should not cross our arms and legs because it shows that we are not interested. We should keep our arms open, held them wide or move them in synchronization with what is being said. Open arms shows, that nothing is being concealed and not crossed legs, that we are interested. The head should be directed towards the client and we should make a relaxed and prolonged eye contact

We should not stand or sit with folded arms because it's not welcoming gesture and it means that we are unwilling to listen to our client. Also, do not clench hands or wring them, as it demonstrates stress, anger, nervousness and anxiety. If we won't pay attention to all these things, the client might get upset, not pleased with service and we even might loose a client.

The use of tone and language effects our communication between clients and us - hairdressers. That it would not happen, we should be friendly with our clients, think before we speak and do not talk too much. Be yourself and practice humility - have a modest view of one's own importance. Speak clear, with confidence, respectfully and politely. Using correct grammar and full sentences. No slang words. Also, do not talk about your own problems. Talk with customers using soft and casual tone. Speak calmly and if you are annoyed or angry, or just having a bad day, control your tone and do not show it. If we would not make communicating with customer comfortable, we won't be able to find out what service they would like and if we understood it correctly..

Personal hygiene has an impact on our and salon's work. Personal hygiene is very important and we have to try to uphold it.
We have to have a shower or bath everyday, that we would not have smelly body odour. Put some body lotion on the skin after shower or bath, that skin would look nice, not dry. Use deodorant to get rid of sweat odour. Wash face everyday. If needed use cleaning products and face creams. Make sure that skin looks clean and nice.

Wash your feet everyday as your feet will get sweaty and smelly after standing all day with shoes in the salon. Wash your hands everyday after using toilet because if you won't do it, you will be spreading germs. Also, wash them after eating to get rid of smell of food. Moreover, you should use hands moisturizing cream as your hands might get rough, from the products you will be using in the salon.

Your nails should be clean, not too long, otherwise you may scratch your client's scalp. Nails should be well manicured and if you are wearing nail varnish, make sure that it's not chipped.
You have to brush your teeth at least twice a day and if necessarily use mouthwash. If you get bad breath smell after eating something, you should have breath spray with you and use it after meals.
Without all that, we also should keep a healthy diet and exercise at least once a week, as the way we feel on the day we will be working on, will have an effect on our work.

Bad experience in the hairdressing salon.
My grandmother went to a hair salon to get her hair dyed and cut. She told to the hairdresser, that she would like a lighter tone of hair colour than she had then and a cut that

The most important thing for a hairdressers is to give a wonderful service to the clients and make them satisfied and happy, that they would like to come back to us again.
Therefore, that we would sure, that it will happen, we have to pay attention to our use of language and tone, body language and a personal hygiene.
