POVERTY AROUND THE WORLD

KANDINA NAMBUHA

Kandina Nambuha is from the Ohangwena Region in northern Namibia. She is of the San People.

Although she has no real clue, Kandina believes she is around 12 years old. She is the last born of eight children in her family. However, three of her brothers died before the age of five.

A lot of people have to beg for food in Namibia because there are no more fruit-bearing forests. They have been fenced off for farming.

NAN NAN

Nan Nan is a HIV-infected child. Her parents both died of AIDS. No one will adopt her because of her illness. Her married sister is banned from seeing her. She now lives with her 15 year old sister who can't find work.

Thanks to the Fuyang AIDS Orphan Salvation Association which is supported by UNESCO, 16 year old Nan Nan enjoys learning music and art with friends. She wants to be an artist when she grows up.

JESÚS

LIFE OF JESÚS

• Jesús ran away when he was 13 because the police accused him of stealing 4500 pesos.
• His mom works as a maid back in Valle de Bravo where he used to live.
• He is the third of 5 brothers and sisters. His eldest brother lives in America.
• He has a friend in Toluca who helped him after he ran away.
• He has not seen his mother in 1 year.

GULAFREZ

Gulafrez has never been to school before. She is the first in her family to start. She has three brothers and three sisters, four of which are married. She is the youngest in her family.

She loves to learn reading in school. After school, she helps her brothers collect plastic off the streets. They either sell the plastic or use it to make fires.

Her mother cleans clothes and houses and her father died in war. She wants to be a doctor when she grows up. She loves helping people.

MARIANA BESNA

Mariana is 7 years old and she loves to read and write. Her favorite stories are Cinderella and Pinocchio. She plays with her Barbie, Nicoleta at Tineretului Park.

She and her 5 year old brother used to live near Bucharest. That was before they became orphans because their mom couldn't take care of them anymore.

She has been an orphan for 3 years. Her father died when she was little. She likes going to school with her friends Nicolae and Livia.
