Pottery Slabs

how to build a slab container

  • Create a paper model of the object you want to build.
  • Wedge clay, then take slab rails to roll out your clay evenly.
  • Use your paper model to cut out the right size and shape of clay.
  • Score and slip edges of the slabs and connect them together.
  • Create a coil to score and slip to the inside corners.

Richard Notkin

Sculptural Teapot

This sculptural teapot was made by Richard Notkin. I like this piece because there's a lot of creativity evidently put into this piece of art. The detail and texture are also great, just by looking at it you can tell what it would feel like. All of these factors combined together, and it's also a functioning teapot.

Abstract Sculpture

What I like most about Paul Soldner's sculpture in this slide is his creativity. In most of his sculptures like this, they are very abstract, but his work makes your eyes flow easily over the piece of art. His craftsmanship also makes it seem as though it was made to look rusty and rough.

Anne Currier makes a lot of abstract sculpture too, like Paul Soldner. In her work, though, her ceramics look flawless. Her craftsmanship is impeccable leaving the impression that it isn't even made out of clay. The slabs are always perfectly formed in the way that seems like they were naturally put together that way.
