POST-WWII: GERMANY

GOALS

  • Allies, France, Great Britain, US, and the Soviet Union arrived to occupy Germany
  • Security of the "Allies" and reconstruction were the two main concerns of the Allies

SECURITY

  • Allies arrested people that they believed threatened security
  • They imposed strict curfews and confiscated items

RECONSTRUCTION

  • "Establish German administration to which a military government could give orders"
  • Governments renamed streets and public buildings that reflected former German government
  • They took over homes and offices to set up government headquarters

ECONOMY

  • Loss of farmland
  • Food crisis
  • Economy relied on coal for heating and fueling industry
  • Infrastructure destruction and coal shortages led to widespread unemployment

SHARE OF POWER

  • Germany was divided between the western Allies and the Soviet Union
  • French, British, and US united their regions to become a democratic West Germany
  • Soviet Union controlled East Germany and imposed communist rule
