Pope Francis

BY MEAGAN HENDERSON, SAMUEL GRANIERI, CASSANDRA Sucoloski

Early Life

  • Pope Francis was born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio.
  • Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 17, 1936.
  • He was one of 5 children.
  • His father, Mario José Bergoglio was a railway worker.
  • His mother, Regina Maria Sivori was a housewife.

His parents were also Italian immigrants. As a child, he was very interested of traditional music and dancing in Uraguay and Argentina also known as Milonga. He attended Wilfrid Barón de los Santos Ángeles for his elementary education.
He graduated from Escuela Nacional de Educación Técnica N° 27 Hipólito Yrigoyen as a chemical technician. As a chemical technician he worked at Hickethier-Bachmann Labratory. He learned later that he was called to the priesthood and discontinued working as a chemical technician.

Elected How:
Elected in March after Pope Benedict XVI resigned, Francis wasted no time in making a new course for the church that has recently been rocked by child sex abuse crimes and cover-up scandals, its misshapen view of women and sexuality, dead or declining membership, and an increasingly harsh tone, more appropriate for the Middle Ages than the 21st century.

The new pope from Argentina - a first "New World" pontiff - seems determined to discontinue all that, if not in doctrine, then in practice, by re-orienting the church to a New Testament prime directive: love, peace and charity in a modern day global context.
Cardinal Bergoglio became the 266th pope of the Roman Catholic Church, the first citizen from the Americas, the first non-European and first Jesuit priest to be named pope.

Bergoglio, now Pope, defied the norms and formalities of the position right from the very beginning. A few instances which prove the same are his acceptance of the cardinals' congratulations while standing instead of being seated, wearing the white Cossack instead of the red mozzetta and iron pectoral cross instead of the gold one worn by his predecessors, on his first appearance as a pontiff.

Cardinal Bergoglio changed his name to Pope Francis after Saint Francis of Assisi. He had chosen the name because of his concern of the well-being of the poor. It is the first time that a pope has been named Francis. The Papal inauguration of Pope Francis was held on March 19, 2013 in St Peter’s Square in the Vatican.

The shield has a bright blue background, the centre top of which is a yellow radiant sun with the IHS christogram on it representing Jesus. Piercing the H is a cross with 3 black nails below it. Under that to the left is a star that represents Mary; the right of the star is a Nard flower representing Joseph. All of these symbols on this Coat of Arms represents the love Pope Francis has for his holy family.

"Among our tasks as witnesses to the love of Christ is that of giving a voice to the cry of the poor, so that they are not abandoned to the laws of an economy that seems at times to treat people as mere consumers."

Documents Written:
"Evangelii Gaudium" ("The Joy of the Gospel"), released by the Vatican. In Pope Francis’ first written document, he shows us his vision of the Catholic Church that is devoted to focusing on helping the poorest and most vunerable.
It is also one of the most assertive genres of this type of document.Pope Francis' first encyclical, "Lumen Fidei," published in July, was mostly the work of his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI.

The pope wrote the new document in response to the October 2012 Synod of Bishops on the new evangelization, but refused the offer to work from a draft provided by synod officials.
Pope Francis' voice is distinctive in the 50,000-word document's relatively laid back style—he writes that an "evangelizer must never look like someone who has just come back from a funeral!"—and its emphasis on some of his signature themes, including the dangers of economic globalization.

Care For the Faithful:
Pope Francis cared for the faithful. He has affected many lives and had them really interested on his speeches on capitalism, poverty, homosexuality, and abortion and how it is very underrated and not important to discuss. These and other pronouncements, made to shake up a Catholic Church hierarchy seen as more obsessed with enforcing orthodoxy than ministering to people's material and spiritual needs, landed him on the cover of TIME magazine and the gay rights magazine The Advocate, as their "2013 Person of the Year." TIME named Francis, "The People's Pope."

Going back some 30 years, with the election of the Cold War pope, John Paul II, the church gained a reputation of being more interested in damning souls than saving lives.Francis wants to help us be peacemakers. He asks the Muslim countries to grant us Christians freedom, religiously, and for us Christians to not be hateful.

What We Learned
That Pope Francis has been making an impact in almost every element in the Church. He has shown people that capitalism, poverty, homosexuality, and abortion are things that do not need to be talked about over and over again. They are all things that are going on in the world and don't need loads of emphasis. The Holy Spirit chose Francis as our new Pope because the Church needed to become simplified. He also warns that priests and lay men shouldn't overemphasize specific teachings that are out of context of essential Christian truths.

Also, he taught us that some people are not as fortunate as most of us and that we were also put on this planet to help some people get a second chance in life and change it for the better. We are taught by Pope Francis that we as christians can be someone's miracle and give them a fresh start in life. The poor are just not as fourtunate souls that have been misled in their life and need a light to lead them out of their dark times of need. Pope Francis' Coat of Arms is a strong symbol that shows his love towards the holy family. In conclusion, we as a group, learned much about our newest Pope and value his wise solutions to the hard topics that arise in the catholic church.

We believe that he is a very brave pope for taking on the difficult topics and finding a solution to change the religious world.
