Michael Jackson, in full Michael Joseph Jackson or Michael Joe Jackson (see Researcher's Note), (born August 29, 1958, Gary, Indiana, U.S.—died June 25, 2009, Los Angeles, California), American singer, songwriter, and dancer who was the most popular entertainer in the world in the early and mid-1980s.

He was an American singer, songwriter, and dancer. Dubbed the "King of Pop", he is regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century.

Musical styles and preference

This broad category includes styles as diverse as doo-wop, early rock and roll, novelty songs, bubblegum music, folk rock, psychedelic rock, baroque pop, surf music, soul music, rhythm and blues, classic rock, some blues, and some country music.

With time, more and more musical instruments have been developed and people started to play them with one another. This resulted in even more sophisticated and even complex sounds being made. The rhythms, the tempo, the beat and more all changed along with the culture.

  • 1960s Pop Rock: The Beatles The early-to-mid 1960s were a simple time for rock 'n' roll fashion. Bands typically wore suits onstage as a sort of obligation. The Beatles made waves with what was deemed to be long hair, at least for men, at the time. The look was adopted by future rockers such as the Rolling Stones and The Who. These groups would later evolve their style with the times, but their early years were sophisticated. Psychedelic Rock: Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin

  • The mid-to-late-1960s saw the rise of psychedelic rock artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane and the Doors. The fashion of this era featured bell bottom jeans, oversized, flowing shirts, colorful garments such as scarves and flashy jewelry. The extravagant style was in direct response to the traditional social norms earlier in the decade. Women, especially, became more self-expressive to break from patriarchal standards. Fleetwood Mac

  • Fleetwood Mac are an ideal example of what the classic rock bands of the '70s wore, and Stevie Nicks was the queen of witchy fashion. It derived a bit from the earlier psychedelic rockers, as many of them still wore button-down shirts and bell bottom jeans, but it was a bit more casual now. There was a lot of long, naturally wavy hair. Led Zeppelin and Aerosmith are other examples of artists who adopted this fashion sense over the decade. Nu-Metal: Korn

  • Nu-metal rose in the 1990s as a genre that blended elements of rock and metal with hip-hop, therefore the attire followed suit. Baggy pants were staples — especially JNCO jeans — Adidas tracksuits, hats, wallet chains, spiked hair and braids. Korn, Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock were among the bands who pioneered the style.
