What is Pop Art

  • Often paintings of mass culture objects or celebrities
  • Aimed to blur the boundaries between "high" art and "low" culture
  • No hierarchy of culture
  • An influential characteristic of Pop art - art may borrow from ANY source

Andy Warhol

Very famous Pop Art artist (1928-1987)

Warhol's most famous piece

  • This is a painting of Marilyn Monroe
  • Warhol used photo-stencils in screen-printing

Roy Lichtenstein

Very famous Pop Art artist (1923-1977)

Lichtenstein's most famous piece

  • This piece is named "Drowning Girl" painted in 1963
  • He often used Ben-Day dots in his art
  • There were often subliminal messages in his art
  • Notice the heavy black lines used for definition

In Conclusion

  • Pop Art was brash, young, fun, and hostile to the artistic establishment
  • And it has deeply changed modern art
