IDENTIFY THE PROBLEM

I wonder what would happen if you add hair gel or cleaning chemicals or hair spray to pond water.

STATE YOUR HYPOTHESIS

PART 2

I think that if I put hair gel into water it will affect it a little bit but not too much because the people that make it should know that after putting it on people will wash it off their hand and after they will wash it out of their hair. I think that putting cleaning supplies will probably affect the water a lot because it’s made to kill bacteria and germs and so it will probably kill some animals and bacteria in the water. So I would assume that the cleaning products would not be a good thing to put down the drain. And I think the same thing for hairspray as I thought for hair gel because you should be able to put it down the drain safely because that’s how you get it out of your hair but it might be bad to put down the drain.

EXPLAIN YOUR EXPERIMENT

PART 3

We used a microscope and had some pond water from our school and mixed some of the pond water with the things we wanted to test. We wanted to see if anything that we put down the drain was really bad for where it ended up and if it was ok and wouldn’t hurt the animals and other things. We wanted to know this so we could be more conscious and know if things were ok to put down the drain or if we could help the environment and not put it down the drain if it was harmful.

HOW WILL YOUR DATA BE GATHERED

PART 4

How we found our information was that we took some pond water and added some of a substance that we wanted to know what would happen if we added it, and looked at it under the microscope to see if anything had changed from when we looked at the pond water by itself. We documented what we found by taking pictures and comparing them. And we also looked at others experiments to see if they had the same sort of results or not and if they found something really bad for pond water or surprising.

HOW WILL YOU ORGANIZE YOUR DATA

PART 5

We organized our data by taking pictures and drawing what some of the things looked like. Also it was very cool because the things were very colourful and interesting shapes under the microscope. It looked kind of like art and pretty because the pond water looked really gross at first but after you looked at it under the microscope it looked cool and more intricate. And I put my information into a presentation.

WHAT CONCLUSIONS DID YOU REACH

IF YOUR HYPOTHESIS WAS WRONG, WHY?

When we added hair spray it made lots of air bubbles in the water a lot more than normal, and when we looked at hair gel under a microscope it was way different and it looked like outer space. And when we put the cleaning substance into the water it looked different because the stuff that had been floating around in the water before was just gone and the water just looked empty. My hypotheses about the cleaning substance was right that it would not be good for the water and I don’t think it was, but my prediction about that hairspray and hair gel would do the same thing was wrong. This was because they had different consistencies and the gel was thicker and the hairspray had lots of air contained in the bottle. Also a lot of things that we put down the drain are actually bad for ecosystems that it might end up in.
