MAN IN STATE OF NATURE

  • Hobbes-Chaos, state of war, fear
  • Locke-Man is bound by natural law, can be discovered through reason
  • Rousseau-Humans lived independent lives but were good, happy, and free.

SOCIAL CONTRACT

  • Hobbes-Power surrendered to sovereign, man no right to resist
  • Locke-Government created to serve, government can't violate natural law
  • Rousseau-Person must submit to will of majority

IDEAL FORM OF GOVERNMENT

  • Hobbes-Totalitarian (Absolute power of state)
  • Locke-Indirect Democracy (Limited Government)
  • Rousseau-Pure Democracy (Majority Rules, no limitation)
