types Of Speeches/Speaking:

  • Constructive
  • Rebuttals
  • CX Period

constructive speeches (8 MIn):

  • Each person in the debate round gets this.
  • Making & building arguments
  • 1AC, 2AC, 1NC, 2NC

Rebuttals (5 min)

  • NO NEW ARGUMENTS
  • Every debater gets this, too.
  • 1AR, 2AR, 1NR, 2NR
  • Refuting and rebuilding arguments
  • 2NC and 1NR should be different (don't be repetitive)

CX Period (3 min)

  • Each debater gets to ask & answer questions
  • 2 rounds of CX for each person = 4 CX rounds.

Prep time (8 min)

  • Used throughout the round
  • Don't use before questioning.
  • Utilize your opponent's prep time as your own.

Evidence

  • "Cards" - Sometimes debaters put 1 piece of evidence on 4x6 index card, thus why 1 piece of evidence can be considered a "card"
  • Every piece of evidence must be cited fully.

4 Basic arguments used in every debate

"HITS"

  • Harms
  • Inherency
  • Topicality
  • Solvency

Harms

  • Unwanted problem(s) of an action or inaction of the current system

Inherency

  • Addresses whether or not the status quo can solve the harm(s).

topicality (AKA "T")

  • Whether the Aff case relates directly or indirectly to the resolution to be debated.
  • Does it the case relate directly or indirectly to the resolution?

solvency

  • Addresses whether the Aff plan can actually solve the harm.
  • Neg will point out flaws of the AFF team's plan.
  • Does the AFF plan create MORE problems?
