POINT OF VIEW

THE VIEW FROM WHICH THE STORY IS TOLD

FIRST PERSON

  • Narrator is a participant in the story
  • Always uses the word "I"
  • Stream of consciousness: The reader is in the narrator's brain
  • Example: To Kill a Mockingbird

SECOND PERSON

  • The narrator directly addresses the audience
  • Uses "you," "your," and/or "yours"
  • Example: Edgar Allen Poe uses it
  • Like he did in "Tell Tale Heart"

THIRD PERSON

  • Narrator is a non-participant in story
  • There are three types:
  • All-knowing/omniscient
  • Limited
  • Objective

ALL KNOWING/OMNISCIENT

  • The narrator can see into all
  • Characters thoughts & emotions
  • Example: "Charlotte's Web"

LIMITED

  • Restricts info to what the character
  • Sees, hears, feels, and thinks
  • Example:
  • Some of the Harry Potter series

OBJECTIVE

  • Narrator can't see into any
  • Of characters thoughts or emotions
  • Example: "Metamorphosis" book
