Simile
A comparison between two opposite objects using the words like or as.

Ex. He smells as bad as a dirty sock pile.

Metaphor
A comparison between two opposite things without using like or as.

Ex. Her eyes are shining stars.

Personification
When an inanimate object does things humans do.

Hyperbole
An exaggerated sentence.

Rhyme
Words with the same ending sounds.

Rhythm
The flow of words in the poem.

Alliteration
Words with the same beginning letter.

Ex. Patty pill poked a pine.

Assonance
Two or more words with the same vowel sound but different consonant sound.

Repetition of the ending consonant sounds.

A brief or indirect reference of something.
