PRESENTATION OUTLINE

POETRY TERMS

SPEAKER

  • The one who speaks or tells the story.
  • The speaker in the poem told a story about death.

LINE

  • A unit of language in which a stanza is divided into.
  • I read the first line in the poem, and it meant a lot to me.

STANZA

  • A paragraph like text in a poem.
  • The main idea of the first stanza was to never give up.

RHYTHM

  • The beat of a a text or poem.
  • The rhythm of the song was very slow.

METER

  • The rhythm created in a poem.
  • The meter of the poem was very fast.

ONOMATOPOEIA

  • Words used to describe actions.
  • Ex: "Boom" "Zap" "Pow"
  • In the Movie Superman there is a lot of onomatopoeias when he was fighting.

IDOIM

  • A phrase meant to mean something else, then what is not really said.
  • "Don't bite the hand that feeds you," is an idiom.

MOOD

  • The feeling the reader feels while reading the passage .
  • The mood of the poem was happy!

NARRATIVE POEM

  • A poem that tells a story and has a plot.
  • I read a narrative poem in class today. It was about a man who was very sick.

SYMBOLISM

  • Something that symbolizes something else
  • The symbolism between the two sisters was amazing!

METAPHOR

  • A phrase that compares two alike things without using "like" or "as"
  • Literary device
  • I used a metaphor to describe my dirty room.

ALLITERATION

  • A phrase repeated of alike sounds or letters
  • EX: Ally always enjoys eating apples.

REPETITOIN

  • Is a simple repeating of a word in the poem.
  • I used repetition to show how angry I really was.

IMAGERY

  • The image the reader gets while reading the passage.
  • When I read a poem about oceans, the imagery I saw was the beach.

PERSONIFICATION

  • When human traits are given to none living things.
  • EX: The Grass swayed in the wind.

SMILE

  • To compare something using like or as.
  • EX: My dog can jump as high as a frog on steroids.

HYPERBOLE

  • An over exaggeration
  • Usually my friends use hyperboles to describe how big the fish they caught was.
