Poaching in Maine

What is it? Poaching can be any form of harvesting a living thing illegally. There are many ways to do this.

There are infinatlly many ways people poach in Maine.

People must follow the hunting and fishing seasons. For example the rifle (or shotgun) season for deer is in November and if someone was to shoot a deer with a rifle before the start or after the end of that season that would be poaching. Also if people were to fish before or after fishing season that would be poaching.

It is required to have proof of a hunting license while hunting. If you are over the age of 16 a fishing license is required as well, If you are under the age of 16 you do not need one.

You are allowed 1 deer per season in Maine (unless a bonus tag is acquired) if you were to shoot 2 it would be poaching.

All of these poaching crimes are serious and punishable by law.

There are many different punishments

You could be fined for large amounts of money.

You could have your license taken away. This would prevent you from hunting in Maine for a specific time.
