Globally, what can we do to regulate and prevent poaching?

Introduction

  • Using deadly force against wildlife
  • Hundreds of species are becoming extinct or endagered
  • Poachers usually escape with little to no punishment
  • The laws against poaching are difficult to enforce
  • Animals become material things like decorations, jewelry, medicine, etc

  • Most animals are harmed in very cruel ways and left for dead
  • They struggle through a great deal of pain and agony
  • Poachers argue it is the only way for them to make a living
  • Others say they rely on the medicine made from the animals
  • It is negatively effecting the earth

Poaching around the World

  • Oceans: whales, dolphins, sharks,etc.
  • Rainforests: parrots, pythons, monkey, etc.
  • Savannah: elephants, rhinos, lions, etc
  • Artic: seals, penguins, narwhals, etc.
  • Temperate Forests: deer, wolves, bears, etc.
  • ...along with others.

Public Awareness

  • Anti-poaching social media campaign.
  • Public rallies with speakers against poaching.
  • More videos that show the tragedies of poaching that aren't too graphic for the general public.
  • Education in the public school systems.

  • Greater awareness.

Poaching Awareness in Education Systems

  • Implement it into environmental science classes in high schools and campuses
  • Start up an Environmental Awareness class that discuss the issue of poaching and other environmental issues.
  • Have anti-poaching speakers visit campuses and schools for talks.

Rangers

  • Rangers are those who risk their lives daily to reduce the level of poaching and increase the chances of catching poachers so that the entire ecosystems are protected
  • They are exposed to harsh physical conditions often with inadequate equipment, pay and support

Rangers are target too!

  • Poachers/wild animals
  • About 150 rangers have been killed in Virunga( in the DRC)
  • Worldwide, about two rangers are killed every week (Partial data)
  • work under specific rules and permitted to fire only in self-denfense

Summary

  • Public awareness will encourage more people to become activists against poaching and convince others never to take part in it.
  • Better training and protection for rangers will cause them to handle situations with poachers more efficiently and safely. This may assist in making a park ranger a more popular job.

  • Upgrading technology and utilizing existing technology will allow governments and anti-poaching organizations to track poachers and suspicious activities.
  • Improving national parks will give animals a better area of land where they can be protected and preserve the ecosystems of the countries.
