PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Parent Orientation

ENROLLING AT KUMON:

  • Attend Orientation
  • Sign up for a Placement Test and complete Registration on same day

Kumon is...

  • Homework everyday
  • Not tutoring
  • Practice, patience and mastery.
Kumon is unlike any academic program, there are no lectures, no blackboards. There is no one teacher teaching an entire grade of students. In fact you could have a 2nd grade student sitting beside a 7th grade student, and they're doing entirely different levels of work. It's work that's adapted FOR them.

-Instead of passively receiving instruction from tutors, students develop self-learning skills.
3) It's not a quick fix. Long term continuous enrollment so skills developed are lifelong.
This is done through:
1) Carefully planned worksheets by the Instructor
2) Daily assignments, 30 min. per. subject. Just like practicing a sport or instrument, daily practice ensures mastery.
3) Examples enable students to figure out new concepts on their own, with lessons that are taught in small steps so that children are less likely to hit a wall and become discouraged.

LOW STARTING POINT

  • Develop confidence from the very first day.
  • Build work habits easily.
  • Mastering material is important!
BELOW GRADE LEVEL

As instructors, one of the most important steps that we need to take towards beginning your child's journey with Kumon is the placement test.

We assess information such as concentration level, speed, handwriting etc.. to determine the best starting point and to design an individualized program based upon your child's abilities, needs and goals.

Usually within the first few weeks you can expect your child to develop better study habits, improved concentration and a more positive attitude towards learning.

**By starting your child at the level that best suits his/her needs, we can ensure that they will understan the basic concepts before moving on to more difficult ones.

If your child at the beginning finds the work very easy, it's great news. It means that they are starting at a comfortable level where there are no gaps in their knowledge. It will also allow your child to build strong study habits.

MATH PROGRAM

WORD PROBLEMS / problem solving type questions.

Not enough to KNOW how to do it, but we aim for MASTERY of materials (AUTOMATICITY, doing without thinking)

Mr. Toru Kumon developed the math program using a top-down structure starting with Calculus. He asked himself what skills were required for his son to be able to solve problems in calculus and by breaking down the subject he developed individual questions written down on paper for his son to solve.

It's very important that children develop a complete grasp of each concept as it is essentail for a smooth transition to the next level and beneficial for a successful long-term Kumon experience.

NEW CONCEPT

Always assigned in class, we want to make sure students understand the new concept before continuing to work on it at home.

Reading Program

Reading Comprehension for English Speakers

THE GOAL OF THE READING PROGRAM IS TO DEVELOP A LOVE OF READING IN CHILDREN.

Many parents wish to enroll their children in Kumon favoring one subject over the other because they know their child best and are familiar with what they may be weak at and what skills need more work.

Children receive the maximum benefit when they're enrolled in both programs however, it completely depends on the child's motivational level.

Pre-reading skills, letter sounds, functions of words.
Sentences, thought sequences, organizing information
Paragraphs, main idea, interpreting text
Summary, story elements, passage organization
Character analysis, plot, critical writing.

Typical Day at Kumon

..and how you can help your child succeed!

Students...

  • Complete worksheets on a daily basis.
  • Come to our center TWICE a week. (Wed, Fri, Sat)
  • Hand in COMPLETED, GRADED/RECORDED work.
graded and recorded BY A PARENT.

Important to give honest feedback and let us know if there are problems at home so that we can help and give tips.

Show and share your commitment to the program. We require a minimum one year commitment because it takes that amount of time on average for a child to reach grade level within the program.

Mountain that is built from the foundation of both the instructor and the parent, while the child is climbing their way to the top.

Parents...

  • Check your child's homework. Why?
  • Talk to us!
  • Let us help you!
What we expect when children come to our center:

1) Homework is done to completion. If any homework is missing or incomplete, we will contact you. Same if a student is absent.

2) Expect the worked to be marked and graded, we'll teach you how to do that so that corrections are done at home. That way a child can easily learn and retain knowledge of fixing their own mistakes.

3) Please let us know by email or phone if you are unable to bring your child to that day's class session. We will make the necessary adjustments and arrangements so that they do not fall behind on their work.

We're here to help you help your child become the person that he or she hopes to be. The most successful Kumon students are the ones who have the most parental involvement.
